BAX shunt: High-performance component for electric vehicles

ID: 1735502

Electromobility is steadily gaining ground in the automotive industry, and its relevance is increasing accordingly. With the presentation of its new BAX shunt, Isabellenhütte is now taking due account of the requirements that this trend is imposing on components for high-power battery management systems.

(industrietreff) - In the last year, demand for high-performance shunts for use in electric vehicles has skyrocketed. This is down to the pace of development in the electromobility sector. Currents of up to 1,000 amps flow through high-voltage batteries with voltages of up to 800V, such as those installed in electric vehicles. Such extremely high power loads require resistors with a larger construction and lower resistance values to keep power losses to an absolute minimum. Which is why the Isabellenhütte has developed the BAX specially for the automotive industry. Alongside the BAS, the BAX shunt is the largest low-ohmic shunt in the company’s product portfolio and thus also the most powerful.

Product launch last May at the PCIM Europe

In other applications, e.g. solar inverters with even higher currents, larger components are by no means a rarity - unlike in the auto industry, where components generally need to be particularly small and intricate, and, at the same time, as lightweight as possible. It is here that the BAX as a battery management shunt is a powerful solution that, with its exceptional long-term stability, permanent power output of up to 50 watts, and permanent currents of up to 1,000 A, was specially developed for use in electric vehicles. Customer-specific adaptations of the resistance values of the standard component are possible. The shunt is also available in a nickel-plated version.
Isabellenhütte unveiled the new, high-performance BAX shunt for the first time at the PCIM Europe in Nuremberg from 7 - 9 May.

Maximum permanent power output of up to 50 watts

The exceptionally low-ohmic BAX shunt is currently available in two variants. One with a resistance value of 0.02 mOhm, and the other with an equivalent value of 0.005 mOhm, with the aim of reducing power losses to an absolute minimum. With dimensions of 84 mm by 36 mm and a thickness of 4 mm, the BAX has a generous cross-section and is thus designed for currents of up to 1,000 A.
